Cone Calorimeter Comparison at 50kw/m2

PERFORMED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND SCHOOL OF FIRE ENGINEERING

FIGURE 1: TOTAL HEAT RELEASE OVER TIME

NO EMBERS SOLUTION PROVEN SUPERIOR

The chart above compares time to ignition and the total heat release of wooden dowels that have been left untreated (red line), coated with DAP (blue line), and coated with No Embers PNS Solution (green line).  DAP or Di-Ammonium Phosphate is the solution currently used by the US Forest Service to fight forest fires.

Time to Ignition: DAP actually accelerated ignition (10 seconds until ignition vs. 12 seconds for uncoated wood), as the ammonia released in the DAP ignites quicker.  No Embers PNS solution slowed ignition to 36 seconds.

Total Heat Release: DAP reduces the total heat release on an uncoated dowel on average by 36%.  In contrast, No Ember PNS Solution averages an 84% reduction in total heat release.  Importantly, the chart shows no further heat release from the No Ember coated dowel at 210 seconds, as the flame has been extinguished.

FIGURE 2: HEAT RELEASE OVER TIME

NO EMBERS COATED DOWELS BURN SLOWLY COMPARED TO UNCOATED DOWELS

The figure above shows cone calorimeter results for No Embers coated dowel verses uncoated control dowels.  Notice the difference in scale on both the x-axis and y-axis to understand the magnitude of the improvement.

FIGURE 3: MASS REMAINING OVER TIME

COMPARISON OF SPECIMEN MASS

The chart above shows the decrease in mass of the control dowel (top) verses the No Embers treated dowel over time.  The specimen mass of the No Embers coated dowel decreases very little and slowly compared to the control.  This is equivalent of decreasing the fuel load in a real fire.  This is critical in forest fires.  Again, notice the difference in scale on both the x-axis and y-axis to understand the magnitude of the improvement.

FIGURE 4: SMOKE PRODUCTION RATE OVER TIME

NO EMBERS SUPPRESSES SMOKE PRODUCTION

The chart above shows the smoke production when a uncoated wooden dowel (top) is burned verses the smoke production of a wooden dowel coated with No Embers (below).

FIGURE 5: PICTURE COMPARISON OF TEST RESULTS

NO EMBERS COATED SAMPLE FORMS PROTECTIVE CHAR

The figure above shows the end product of the cone calorimeter testing.  The uncoated control dowel and the dowel coated with aqueous DAP are reduced to embers and ash.  The dowel coated with No Embers formed a protective char that prevented burning of the wood beneath the char and prevented the wood from being reduced to embers and ash. Forest fires spread primarily by ember formation so this property of No Embers is critically important for preventing forest fires from spreading.
